We love being engaged...

...so much that we're doing it for another year!

We are doing it for real this time! New date is June 25th and we are very excited. All other details remain the same, and we'll confirm logistics as we get close to the date.

Not our story

Yvette and Chris were each, separately, in Hawaii as part of the annual Ultimate Frisbee tournament. Yvette was on the Stanford team as a 5th year power-grad student, and Chris had only accumulated 2 years of rust, playing for Skeletor, the Stanford alumni team. As everyone knows—but no one plans for—it often rains (a lot) in February. Chris's future planning—mixed with Angus and Colin's lack of planning and youthful optimism—combined into the perfect storm for Chris and Yvette to not actually start their story. At some point in the middle of the night, Angus and Colin (the presumed villains, but actual heroes) had enough rain and sand while sleeping on the beach. They ran back to their tent, which they had gifted Yvette for the weekend to use all by herself, scoffing at the idea that they would sleep in a tent when there was a perfectly good beach nearby. "Powski, you have to get out!" the 2 sandy boys yelled as they reclaimed their tent, casting Yvette into the elements. Enter Chris, the hero (and writer) of this story. Chris had spent enough rainy and sandy weekends in Waimanalo to know better, enjoying a 3-person tent all to himself. His 7th sense awoke him to this damsel in distress (his 6th sense is comedic timing, as we all know). He offered the other 2/3 of his tent (you expected 1/2 didn't you?) to Powski, as she was known in her frisbee-playing days. Some people think this act of kindness, bravery, and smarts ignited the first spark between the two. But in reality, neither of us remember it that way. Too bad, it would have made for a really nice story...

Our story

A fortnight later, Chris and Yvette found themselves at the same pre-party for the end of the season Winter League Ultimate Frisbee Party, despite playing on different teams (interesting…) Little did they know, they were about to play the most important game of their lives: Die! (roll). The rules are simple: The roller picks an unfortunate person, forms a dare, and picks a number. If they roll that number, the dare MUST occur (unless it doesn’t, and there are a few pretty easy ways to get out of it). Yvette and a gaggle of meanies teamed up on poor Chris. “If we roll a four, you have to introduce yourself to everyone you meet as ‘Hi, my name is Chris McCarty. I’m single and looking’”. The die bounced around for what seemed like hours, and it landed on a four. Alea iacta est (that’s Caesar, and my mom was a Latin teacher). I must have said that phrase over 100 times that night. And it only worked once. Perfect odds. In the retelling of this story, Yvette uses the phrasing “The bet backfired”. I’m assuming she misspoke.

Pi(e) Day

March 14

Our first date was on Pie Day (or pi day), March 14. We had sushi and got a full pie to share with friends. For a while, every time we went out to sushi we made a rule to order something new we had never tried before. Then it backfired one time, and now we get what we want.

The Engagement

October 14, 2018

On a crisp autumn day, we were hiking in the White Mountains peeping the colorful leaves. After what seemed like a never-ending climb, with a perfect view of the colorful patchwork, it seemed like the perfect time. But some rando walked up and sat 10 feet from us and took out a sandwich. So instead, after a few minutes on our hike back down, we stopped and decided to get married. We had no ring at the time, and we kept it a secret for 2 months until we saw family for Christmas (sorry!). But it was fun having it as our little secret for a bit. Once we got a ring, Yvette would rush to put it on each night she got home from work. And remembered to take it off before leaving the apartment each day.

Our Wedding

CA Friends and family: we miss you and are sad that we moved away! MA Friends: we are so glad we moved and got to meet you! We are excited to spend some extended time with everyone throughout the weekend at Circle Bar B, and we hope you all get to spend some time with people you haven't met--because you're all so great!
