Jay and Yghie's story began with a little help from Jay’s sister, Lou. She knew her brother was single and ready to mingle. Lou had met Yghie when she visited Idaho, and after returning home to Canada, she decided to play matchmaker. Yghie received an Instagram follow request from the username @_itsjayaquino — now known as @_itsj2y. The real story began with an Instagram message from the bride to the groom. Yghie: may kamukha ka (you look like someone I know) Jay: sino hahaha (who? hahaha) Yghie: future boyfriend ko (my future boyfriend) You heard that right, Yghie did shoot her shot here. Those Instagram DMs quickly turned into Snapchat streaks, then Telegram chats, and eventually FaceTime calls. FaceTime became the gateway to everything — romantic, right? This is the beauty of a modern day love story. As teenagers entering their twenties, they spent every day doing home works on the phone together, buying each other food, and playing games online — as young lovers do. They met for the first time in Seattle, Washington April 2019. From that day forward, they tried to see each other as often as possible. Days turned into months, and months into years. Jay endured the depot life with Yghie, and Yghie endured nursing school with Jay. Together, they achieved their dreams despite the distance, the struggles of the rigorous programs they both completed, and the challenges of border closures during the pandemic. They then traveled — and traveled — and traveled some more. That’s how they endured being 600 miles apart: holding onto the hope of seeing each other again. On October 5, 2025, during a stunning afternoon with the clearest of skies, Jay got down on one knee and asked Yghie to marry him — and she said yes — on the beautiful island of Tofino, British Columbia. Jay and Yghie will now be celebrating the beginning of a new chapter. This time, there’s no need for FaceTime, & you will be there to see it all happen.
