Once Upon A Time in a Land Down Under...

From the Americas to Australia and Back

We met in our international relations program at the University of Melbourne in Australia in February, 2018. It only took Dylan a month and a half to work up the courage to approach Yessica after class one day to ask her on a date. On that fateful day, Yessica decided to sprint out of class (she is faster than she looks). Once Dylan caught up with her, our shared love of music, food and exploring our curiosities across borders brought us together. We became inseparable during graduate school. We shared countless late-night study sessions. We camped in the bush of Tasmania. We took a train from Jakarta to Yogyakarta and hiked a volcano in Bali. We (Dylan) rowed a boat on the Ganges River in Varanasi, India. Before our graduation, our parents all came to Melbourne. Our families bonded and celebrated our achievements together. We drove the Great Ocean Road and spent Christmas in Hobart, Tasmania. When it came time for our families to leave, we consoled one another and prepared to continue our careers in Australia. That was January, 2020. In March, Melbourne and much of world went into lockdown because of COVID-19. We became inseparable in another sense. Each day, we went to the grocery store hoping to find toilet paper. Each night, we played UNO and experimented in the kitchen making new dishes. We grew closer and discussed our future together. As the situation with COVID-19 grew darker, a chance came for us to return to the Americas on a flight to Los Angeles—the last out of Australia. From there, we planned to wait for Colombia to open its borders and apply for a visa so Yessica could join Dylan in the U.S. After arriving, we explored the Pacific Northwest and met with more of Dylan’s family. With so much uncertainty in the world, we decided to stay inseparable. Dylan proposed on the shores of Lake Chelan, and we will become inseparable in yet another sense on October 31st of 2020. It has been quite an adventure, and we hope you will join us for the next step.
