**English: We met on a night I hadn't planned to go out; it was Mother’s Day, and it was my first ‘party’ with my brother and mom as an adult. I had only been in New York for three months. From the first minute, Cesar caught my eye. I thought, 'He’s so handsome!' Though I estimated him to be around 35 due to his beard, I liked that he was tall and had prominent eyebrows. But since it was my first party with my mom and brother in years, I behaved well. I’m sure if I had been out with my friends, I would have given him a kiss, haha! But since I wasn’t, I talked to him about what I needed, and that’s how we started talking. He had limited Spanish, and I spoke no English, so having a smooth conversation was quite a challenge. Despite this, before the night ended, he took my phone and called himself to save my number. From that day, he texted me daily, read me stories over the phone, and said we’d practice English. He was very persistent, inviting me out every weekend. Finally, I accepted, and our first date was at the Brooklyn Bridge. Just like that, seeing him made me fall in love.
Our journey together began on Mother’s Day 2015, at a family gathering at a local bar called Tropical, located in Woodhaven, Queens, NY. Funny enough, I had spent my entire teenage years and adulthood in Woodhaven, yet I’d never set foot in this restaurant despite driving past it countless times while growing up. That night, we danced, drank, and laughed, and I’ll never forget the magical feeling I had after just a few hours with Ximena and her family. The night felt so magical that I boldly hijacked Ximena’s phone to save my number in it. And the rest is history!
