Wyatt and Emily met at the 2015 ELCA Youth Gathering in Detroit, MI. Out of the 30,000 people in attendance, Wyatt and Emily’s church groups just happened to bump into each other and they awkwardly exchanged social media info before parting ways (because that was the ‘cool’ thing to do). Initially, they didn’t think much of it. But the two were drawn to each other’s witty humor, and ended up talking all day every day during the rest of the trip. At the end of the week, thousands of youth groups gathered at Ford Field for a send-off. One vivid memory that Wyatt and Emily share is when they were flashing their phone flashlights at each other across the dark stadium – it may have seemed silly, and their friends were very confused, but they will never forget how special that moment felt. Afterwards, Emily forced her friends to ask him for a photo because she was too shy to do it herself (see photo at the bottom of the page!). This was the last time they thought they would ever see each other. Following this mission trip, Wyatt and Emily's daily texting turned into daily phone calls, which then turned into daily facetime calls. They started staying up until 4am talking and laughing with each other, and very quickly became best friends. This impalpable friendship flourished for years, and though they secretly both fell in love with each other along the way, their relationship remained platonic. In 2017 after Emily's freshman year of college, she joked that Wyatt should come visit her – that joke turned into reality when Wyatt was on a plane a few days later! This was the first time the two were together in person since the mission trip years prior. After a stiff hug and some awkward small talk, they quickly jumped into rhythm and had the best weekend together. A few days after Wyatt returned from that visit, him and Emily were having their nightly facetime call when mid-laugh Wyatt slipped and said "I love you" for the first time. After some mocking from Emily, she said she loved him too. The rest was history. After 7 years, 3 states and 1 dog, Wyatt and Emily are excited to tie the knot and celebrate with their closest friends and family!
