Our story began back in high school, where we were both on the swim team. Austin was a few years ahead of me, and while we didn’t talk much, we always crossed paths—especially since we often swam the same events. He was either right in front of me or just behind me in every race. We’d exchange a quick “good job” here and there, but that was about it. What he didn’t know was that I had the biggest crush on him. I was way too shy to say anything, though. Austin still says he’ll never forget the moment he was walking down from the benches one day and said, “Excuse me.” I turned around and smiled at him. To me, it was just a passing moment—but to him, it stayed. After high school, life moved on and we went our separate ways. A few years later, I started attending a young adult Bible study and met a really kind couple. One day, while chatting, we somehow ended up talking about our high school swim team days. They asked if I remembered a guy named Austin. The name was familiar, but I couldn’t quite place it. They showed me a photo—and as soon as I saw his face, it all came rushing back. That old little crush I had in high school… sparked something. Being the person I am, I went home that same night and followed him on Instagram. I noticed his Snapchat was in his bio, and thought to myself, “Heck, why not? What do I have to lose?” So I added him—and sent a message asking if he remembered me. He did.
