How We Met

High School Sweethearts who found love AFTER graduation

John and I didn't start out as your normal high school sweetheart story. We didn't fall madly in love with each other over night, he didn't take me to prom, and we certainly weren't the IT couple of the school. No, our story is special. It all started in a detention room numbered 307. We were both forced to be there by our teachers and that is where this all begun. I saw John for the first time in this room, next to the windows all by himself. There were so many open chairs and of course I HAD to sit in the one right next to him. I passed him notes that he was not too fond of, but after awhile he and I began to develop a friendship. 307 turned into our art room where we spent time together and that blossomed into hallway chats and locker room banter. He and I were becoming friends. That was between 9th grade all the way until senior year. Senior year came and went and we were becoming inseparable. Once we left those high school halls we were finally free! Free to do whatever we wanted. And we did...together. John and I became best friends and did everything. Mall runs, late night drives, phone calls, trips, you name it; we did it. After years of being best friends there always felt like there was something more, but the friendship was so perfect. John and I had our ups and downs, and our biggest fall was when I allowed him to walk away. He loved me and I was afraid of losing him to the point that I lost him anyway. 6 months we didn't speak until he reached out and asked if I was going to our high school reunion. I knew this was the universe bringing him back to me. I asked to see him that night and the moment I saw him, I hugged him, cried, and knew I would never let him go. And I didn't. We started dating a few months after the reunion when I gave him a cup of M&M's that read 'Be my Boyfriend?'. Of course I had to seal deal with a quirky pick-up line! He said yes and it's as if we both had our best friend back, and we loved and still love every minute of it. Who says your high school sweetheart is just a phase? If this is a phase then let it last a lifetime. Because I wouldn't change our story for the world, for it brought us together, ripped us a part, and then showed us we were meant to be together. Which is my favorite part.

The Proposal

07/28/23

Her Perspective: Waking up felt different, like today was going to be a good day! I knew something was up because John doesn't plan things. At least not things like a hotel room in the Cape. But, I was along for the ride just hoping something special was coming. John and I decided to go mini golfing in the morning and then grabbing something small to eat. I unfortunately lost mini golf, but it was because unbeknownst to me, I was developing a sinus infection and my eye was slowly swelling shut. So, I definitely should have won. Afterwards we went back to the hotel to get ready for the rest of our day and John was pacing around looking nervous. He told me we were going to three places and had to go quickly to each before the storm. I got ready as quickly as I could and then we were off! First stop was coming up and the area was familiar. I've been here before. Many times. As we walked down the sandy walkway to the water I see a familiar human. John's Dad! What was he doing here? Soon enough John and I are taking pictures and he then turns to me, holds my hands, quotes Shrek the musical, and gets down on one knee. He finally asked me to marry him. Of course, with tears coming and my heart beating I said yes. Finally my best friend becomes my future husband. My dreams have finally started to come true. Now that the first stop is done, who cares about the next 2!! I'M A WHOLE ASS FIANCEE! His Perspective: The day had come and the only thing going through my mind was "How in the world am I going to propose with a storm coming this evening". The plan was to go out to mini golf in the afternoon and then travel around Falmouth to explore the 3 major landmarks. Those being the Falmouth lighthouse, the knob, and a special point looking over the ocean. I was panicking and pacing all around our hotel room. I do not handle these situations well. I was able to pull myself together, and out the door we went! Time was flying by and winning at mini golf was on my mind. After a hard-fought battle, I did bring home the gold medal, sorry Jamie you lost fair and square. At this point we went back to the room to get ready, and of course I had to pace again. I decided to propose at the first location because it was a special spot for both of us and I wanted to beat the storm instead of saving that location for the end. We left on our adventure to our first stop, the big one. This spot means a lot to her and I because we have had some of my favorite memories there. The spot is a little section between two houses that overlooks the ocean and Martha's Vineyard. When we arrived, my trusty cameraman was front and center (not sneaky at all) and the time had come. I brought her over to the rocks where we overlooked the ocean as I planned, but the weather had other ideas and blew us all over until we had to retreat. So, we went inland a few steps and after almost no delay I popped the question. She seemed shocked and happy. I don't think she expected the first location to be the place I would propose, but it went perfectly. Afterwards I got to explore the lighthouse and the knob with my fiancee and her newfound ring. Not only did I win the gold medal at mini golf but I also won the heart of my best friend. Two wins in one day isn't half bad.

For all the days along the way
