How We Met

First Comes School, Then Comes Marriage

We met while attending Southern Wesleyan University together. We were part of the same friend group and hung out together fairly often. However, we didn't get very close until our spring semester. A group of us were going out to dinner and Bri was concerned about the driving ability of those who were driving. Scott was driving separately because he had a meeting to get to later that night. In the past Scott had driven Bri and some of her friends to their dorm across campus when it was late and he didn't want them walking so she trusted his driving. She asked if she could ride with him and he said sure. This was one of the few times the two had been alone together. Bri had been having a rough time and Scott spent the car ride letting her talk out all that was going on. After dinner, some of the group went to a Five Below but Bri and Scott were the only two to hang out until it closed - goofing around and just having a great time together. From that day forward, we hung out and/or texted nearly every day. There was even one day where we were hanging out and Scott partially quoted the Bee Movie and Bri finished it. That's when Scott said he knew she was the one. On April 5th, 2019 we went on our first date to the Clemson Botanical Gardens where Scott helped Bri with a school project and happily watched her point out different angiosperms and gymnosperms over and over - that's when she knew he was a keeper. Afterwards, we went to the group's frequented restaurant, Red Bowl, and enjoyed a lovely dinner together. We spent the rest of the night getting to know one another and making each other laugh.

The Proposal

The Ol' Bait and Switch

Our 5-year anniversary was coming up, and Scott had been making preparations to propose and move towards marriage for a while, so the timing was perfect. While Scott had been trying to figure out how to bring up recreating our first date for our anniversary without making Bri suspicious, she actually ended up suggesting it. Everything was coming together and all that was left for Scott to do was figure out how to make sure she wouldn't be expecting the ring. After booking a photographer and insisting that Bri get her nails done for "dressy" reasons, Scott got promise rings and hatched a plan. The night before the anniversary, he gave Bri the rings and promised that within a year from that night, he would propose. Bri accepted the gift as the anniversary gift, and then Scott successfully proposed to her the next day. Scott got down on one knee, popped the question, and Bri's first words were: "Is this real?" Two of our close friends just happened to be on a date at the Gardens at the same time as the newly engaged couple, so we got to celebrate together on the spot. We then went out to a fancy restaurant to celebrate where the waiter brought us champagne to celebrate. We shared a look and a laugh as Scott turned to the waiter and said, "Neither of us drink". The waiter laughed and offered a lovely lemon tart instead. We then returned to celebrate with Bri's roommates at the house with some sparkling grape juice and recounted the story.
