One day in June, 2019, John was in the parking lot of the In-N-Out in Larkspur, CA, having just finished delivering and installing a big project in San Francisco. He took out his phone for a trusty dopamine boost. Around the very same time, in a neighboring fancy Marin town, Claire was doing her own dopamine dive. Both opened a dating app called Bumble. Claire found John. John found Claire. They both "swiped right." "But it looks like this dude lives in Sacramento?" Claire said to her dear friend Yvonne, "This could never work." "But Claire," she replied, "you go to Davis at least once a week with me, to help with my tomato research. Also... you don't have a job right now. So you've got time. Just go on one date." Well, she was right. They messaged and then texted and then eventually got together to meet, at a bakery in Marin, on June 29, 2019. They proceeded to hang out for 12 hours straight. And they've been hanging out ever since.
