Our first date was made possible with the help of some friends who knew we were both interested in finding a nice Jewish partner. We decided to meet at Raimo's Pizza in Hicksville, NY to keep it casual and easy-going. Mitch ordered a salad pizza and both a vanilla and chocolate gelato because he said he liked both flavors equally. (We now know that's a lie and chocolate is the clear winner.) Despite these red flags, Rebecca still saw something special in him, and they continued to get to know each other. At the end of the night, Mitch asked Rebecca on another date the following weekend, which led to dates every single weekend from then on.
In July 2019, we booked a seven-night Western European Disney Cruise sailing from Barcelona, Spain to Dover, England with stops in Cádiz, Spain, Lisbon, Portugal and Brest, France in between. On paper, this was the perfect opportunity for a romantic proposal. The day we were scheduled to fly to Barcelona from LaGuardia (via Charlotte), the airport terminal was closed and we missed our flight. We were both devastated, but ended up rescheduling for the following day. On the flight to Charlotte, we were seated next to a man that changed both of our lives - David Milligan. This 7th grade language arts teacher was full of wisdom, kindness and positivity despite many health challenges he'd faced throughout his young life. He told us that we already appeared to be married, he praised our relationship and he truly helped us find a bright light in what we thought was a crappy situation. The Disney Cruise was an incredible, unforgettable adventure. David was right. We might have faced challenges getting across the ocean to Europe, but we wouldn't trade the experiences for anything - we have memories to last us a lifetime. Once the cruise came to an end and we docked in Dover, we took a shuttle to London where we spent the last 48 hours of our trip. Since our time was so limited in London, we thought that the best way to see the city was to go on a dinner city cruise, which we scheduled for the last day of our trip. That afternoon as we were heading to see Bevis Marks Synagogue (part of Rebecca's sephardic heritage), we stopped for lunch at a small sushi restaurant around the corner. At the end of our meal, Mitch asked Rebecca, "Will you be my sushi partner forever?" Rebecca replied, "Of course!" Mitch then said, "I want to do it now." Rebecca was speechless, thinking that the proposal was going to happen on the dinner cruise that evening. Mitch came next to Rebecca, shared beautiful words and then proposed.
Our first vacation together was in December 2018 where we sailed aboard the Disney Dream to Disney's Castaway Cay and Nassau, Bahamas. We loved Disney Cruise Line so much that we decided to sail again in July 2019 - this time for a longer cruise and across Europe, which led to our engagement. Since DCL holds such a special place in our hearts, we felt that it would be exciting to have our wedding at Disney's Castaway Cay as our close family and friends sail with us for a weekend to the Bahamas. While we were planning for this cruise wedding for many months, in light of recent circumstances, we have decided to move our wedding locally in New York, at The Davenport Mansion in New Rochelle. We are keeping our beachy, waterfront theme though, as we exchange our vows over The Long Island Sound!
