How We Met

Shirtless Hinge Pictures to Cantonese Bonding

It all started with a classic shirtless photo. Win Seen was casually swiping on Hinge when she stumbled upon a guy lounging on a giant rock at the beach—looking confident, grinning ear to ear, and, well, shirtless. Naturally, she gave it a like. Moments later, Jonathan slid into her inbox with an opener so iconic it should be framed: "I like pizza." Win Seen, thankfully, did not let this legendary first impression deter her. Instead, she humored him, and before they knew it, plans were set to meet in Industry City in late April 2022. On the day of their first date, Jonathan, in true Jonathan fashion, was late—blaming the bike marathon that had apparently taken over the city. Luckily, he made up for it over crispy tonkatsu and fresh sushi at the Japanese food court. Somewhere between bites, Jonathan casually steered the conversation toward how many kids they might want someday and whether Win Seen ever saw herself getting married one day—bold moves for a first date. Win Seen, impressed that he was asking the right questions, decided to put Part Two of her secret date plan into action. Ever the planner, she pulled up the Botanical Garden’s website on her phone, worked her magic, and secured free summer tickets in just two minutes. Once they finally arrived at the garden, they wandered through lush greenery, making laps around it, deep in conversation about life, family, and everything in between. At some point, Jonathan shared a special steamed egg and dried scallop recipe his mom had taught him—something Win Seen had never heard of before. Thoroughly impressed, she listened intently. Jonathan, never one to miss an opportunity, grinned and said, "I think I deserve a peck on the cheek for sharing this secret recipe." And just like that, their first “cheeky” peck happened—literally. So sneaky! Somewhere along the way, Jonathan, with a twinkle in his eye, boldly claimed that he spoke very impressive Cantonese but wouldn’t dare demonstrate it because he didn’t want to "embarrass" Win Seen. Naturally, this only made Win Seen extremely excited—which, in turn, made Jonathan extremely intimidated. And so began a pattern that started with this very first date—Jonathan asking, "When can I see you again?" Many dates (and the same question at the end of each one) later… the rest is history. 💕 P.S. Guess who actually had better Cantonese? 😜
