The Texas State Capitol offers free 30-minute tours, or you're free to pick up a self-guided tour pamphlet and explore at your own pace. Between the Capitol's ornate architecture, and its grounds comprising 22 acres of historic monuments, it's absolutely worth seeing.
South Congress has a huge variety of boutiques and restaurants worth checking out! Whether you're in the mood for window shopping, buying a pair of leather boots from Tecovas, or stopping for ice cream at Amy's, it's well worth the trip. If all that shopping works up an appetite, there are tons of food trucks and restaurants!
For outdoor activities, check out Zilker Park downtown. The botanical garden is beautiful, and there are miles of walking trails around Zilker that connect to the gravel hike and bike trail around Town Lake, as well as kayaks or stand up paddle boards rentals.
The Austin 360 Bridge (which is also known as the Pennybacker Bridge) is an architecturally pleasing bridge on Austin's west side that allows Highway 360 and pedestrians to cross Lake Austin/the Colorado River. This bridge is a one of our favorite photo spots in Austin. The bridge also has a wonderful overlook accessible by a short and fairly easy hiking trail that is well worth a quick stop.
Rainey Street is another great place to enjoy an afternoon or evening drink when the weather's nice. Many of its watering holes are constructed inside historic bungalows, where you can enjoy a nice cocktail and outdoor seating. The Container Bar is a unique spot that's built out of shipping containers, and is definitely worth stopping by!
If you're looking to go on a shopping spree, the Domain is the perfect spot. It's a contemporary outdoor shopping plaza with a wide variety of brand-name stores & dining options. Culinary Dropout and Cyclone Anaya's are two of our favorite restaurants at the Domain!
One of the most popular brunch spots in the city, Jacoby’s, is a ranch-to-table restaurant in east Austin with all the delicious southern breakfast staples you could want: chicken fried steak and waffles, buttermilk biscuits and gravy, Texas pecan cinnamon rolls, and so much more.
Located in the historic Clarksville neighborhood, the restaurant features a large bar, cozy indoor dining accented by shiplap walls and a large outdoor patio featuring a historic heritage tree. The bar menu offers a wide selection of cocktails, wines and beers, and the dinner menu focuses on a variety of snacky plates, taco selections, and Asian comfort food items.
As their signs say, Torchy’s tacos really are damn good. At all Torchy's locations, breakfast tacos are served all day (the Migas is objectively the best), and lunch tacos are outside the realm of your standard taco joint, with unexpected ingredients and flavor combinations. One of our favorites is the Trailer Park with fried chicken, green chiles, and poblano sauce (get it “trashy” with queso, it’s worth it, trust us!)
From March (possibly late February if we're lucky with warmer weather) to October, over 1 million bats emerge nightly from the underside of the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge in Austin. They usually start to emerge from the bridge around 20 minutes before sundown. You can watch from the top of Congress Avenue Bridge, the walking path under the bridge, or from the water in one of the many boat or kayak rental options nearby.
Circuit of The Americas is the premier destination for world-class motorsports and entertainment in the United States. With 1,500 acres in the rolling hills just outside downtown Austin, the 3.41-mile racetrack hosts a variety of different motorsport events throughout the year, including our favorite, the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix.
