Formal comes from the Latin forma meaning ‘shape' or 'mold,’ which is to say that no one really knows what formal attire means. We like to think it means that men wear suits and women wear either long dresses or cocktail dresses. But ultimately wear whatever makes you happy and fits into your version of "formal."
