How We Met

The start of the 104s

It was April 14, 2018, on Admitted Students Day at Randolph-Macon College. Sam had already committed to Randolph-Macon, and James was still undecided. At the start of the morning, we both remembered President Lingdren speaking in the gym about how he had just gotten back from a reunion with an alum couple in Georgia who met at admitted students day many years before, and thinking how funny it would be if we ended up having a story like that. The day goes on, and it is time for the activities. When we checked in for the event, we were both handed a name tag with our names, city, and a number. The purpose of the number was to find as many people as you could with that number, and the more people you found, the more raffle tickets you got. Sam was walking up the fountain with the student center behind her. James was walking towards Thomas branch when Sam saw James' name tag and yelled, "104!!!" James just looked at her with his soft half smile and wide eyes, while Sam couldn't shut up (as per usual). Proceeded to say, "You don't know me, but  my name is Sam, and I'm a 104, and you are a 104, and now we have to go around and find all the other 104s so we can win prizes." James' response: Okay, sounds good. James' thoughts: "Someone has to talk to all these people, and it sure isn't going to be me." Years later, we found out that April 14, 2018, was actually the 104th day of the year. Since that moment, 104 has been the easiest and most comforting title the two of us have shared.  At the root of it all, no matter what was happening in the world, as long as we had our 104, it was all that mattered.
