Rick is Debbie's (a lifelong friend and our Matron of Honor) little brother. In the 1960's, he was the kid who destroyed our newly set up Barbie worlds, busted through the house like the a tornado and had a belly laugh that no matter what, brought a smile to everyone who heard him. By pure accident, we ran into each other years later at a dance competition. We chatted for a bit then went our separate ways...or so I thought. Later that day, I got a text from Rick's sister: What did you do to my brother? He wants your number. We exchanged numbers and we texted each other here and there, but that was about it. Fast forward to August 31, 2013: Rick's nephew, Justin (Debbie's son), was getting married. I attended the wedding with my dear friend, Elaine. As I got out of the car, Rick did a cat-call kind of whistle and while shaking my head, I grinned from ear to ear. Rick. Only Rick. We spent the evening talking and catching up--and laughing...lots of laughing...lots of great conversation. The following morning, I had forgotten to bring the newly married couple their wedding card. My intent was to toss it into Debbie's mailbox, but Rick was in the driveway working on a boat. With no plans of staying, Rick convinced me to at least stop in and say hello. When I got ready to leave, I was walking out the driveway and Rick called me back to him. He leaned in, gave me a little kiss on the lips and said: I'll be seeing you later! WHAT JUST HAPPENED????!!!!!
Last minute plans for dinner, Rick says let's go to Vinoklet Winery. YUM! Sounded great to me. So I called ahead to make reservations. When the woman on the phone asked for the name, I looked at Rick, winked and said: Mary Ann & Rick Helmes. Little did I know that at that moment, Rick went upstairs and retrieved the engagement ring from it's hiding place, and brought it to the winery. After we said grace, he pulled out the ring and asked me to marry him. WHAT JUST HAPPENED???? Rick told me that he had asked each of my kids for their mom's hand in marriage. Many stated they were so thankful for the smile and laughter that Rick had brought into their mom's life. They gave their blessings!
