The Proposal

July 2020

To escape the heat of the Houston summer and to take advantage of the new, remote-work lifestyle we had found ourselves in, we planned a roadtrip to Seattle to enjoy the climate and to spend time with family and friends. So in July of 2020 we packed up Rachel’s car, loaded our dog Yoshi into the backseat, and started off on the long drive toward the Pacific Northwest. The ring and a celebratory bottle of champagne were hidden carefully in my bag waiting for the perfect opportunity. One thing you know about Rachel, is that she likes rocks. And in particular, she has a real infatuation with a certain group of rocks in an unassuming bit of ranchland in central Utah. I had spent the last three years hearing about Rachel’s field location and the deltaic deposits exposed near Price known as “the slumps.” And with a name like that, I knew it was a place for romance like none other and that it just couldn’t be passed by. We spent the day driving west across Utah, enjoying the sights along the way, with Rachel’s excited explanations of the roadside geology becoming more and more animated as we approached our destination. I’m lucky that Rachel being both distracted by the rocks and unwaveringly trusting had missed my fumbling, my nerves, and the hand that wasn’t able to keep from slipping in an out of my pocket to check on its contents. After a short hike we had arrived at a crumbling tan outcrop standing alone on a hillside. With a good look around and a detailed explanation of the depositional processes that had lead these rocks to find their home there completed, it was time for a picture to commemorate a meeting between the man and the rocks that Rachel loves. I propped up the phone, set it to video, and captured Rachel’s surprise when I went to one knee and put the ring on her finger. Warm champagne from plastic hotel cups provided a perfect toast to a perfect day.
