Originally called La Baca for the Spanish word meaning cow. Created in 1846 the county covers 970 square miles of the Coastal Plain in South Texas between the Lavaca and Navidad Rivers. Today Lavaca County includes the towns of Hallettsville (county seat), Moulton, Shiner, and Yoakum. Since 1996 the Festival of Lights kicks off the lighting extravaganza with over 300,000 lights that shine bright throughout the Christmas season.
The community of Hallettsville has a proud history rooted in the immigrants from Germany and Czechoslovakia that began settling there in the mid 1800s. A “kolache” is a Czech pastry with a fruit filling not to be commonly confused with a “klobasnek” or “pig in the blanket” as we like to call it which contains a meat filling. “Kolache” for those of Czech descent, contain only fruit or cheese, never meat. Hallettsville’s Kolache Fest is an annual tribute and celebration of this rich heritage.
