Mekala and Wesley met through a mutual friend, a bar tender at the restaurant Mekala was working at. They immediately felt a connection and planned a date for that evening. Unfortunately, North Carolina winters have a funny way of surprising you with snow storms, so the date had to be postponed. Since she was working in a restaurant, Mekala's schedule didn't allow for a normal dinner date. Instead, they opted to meet for breakfast at IHOP and have been inseparable ever since.

In the Fall of 2018, Wes began organizing a surprise scavenger hunt proposal for Mekala. He enlisted their closest friends and family to meet Mekala at all of her favorite places around town and help lead her to the big moment using riddles and clues. After spending an entire day chasing Wes down, Mekala finally found him and their families waiting in the Butterfly Garden, where he tried to pop the question, but she said "YES!" before he could get down on one knee.
