Imagine sitting next to someone during a new hire orientation that would end up being your future spouse. This scenario was how Rachel & I met, quickly followed by news breaking that someone had run into my parked car in the nearby lot. Fast forward to the next year – Rachel and I had very little interaction as we worked in separate buildings/departments. That was until the early part of 2019. I was recovering from my 2nd ACL reconstruction and was hobbling by the Marketing department when Rachel approached me asking what had happened. At first, I responded (rudely) that I didn’t want to talk about it, but quickly realized how stupid I was acting. We briefly spoke and connected on the fact that we both had our ACLs repaired and how grueling the recovery process is. A few weeks later we found ourselves attending a breakfast for a new company product launch. We continued to joke about our unfortunate athletic injuries and even compared our scars from surgery as per tradition. After that conversation, I decided that I was going to do the unthinkable - I was going to ask out a work colleague. We exchanged messages for a few days before I finally built up enough courage to shoot my shot (you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take). Luckily, she said yes and we decided to meet at Brick n Brew in Media (great name) for a drink or several. Things started off a little rocky as Rachel thought that she was being stood up due to a work call causing me to be 20+ minutes late. She was about to leave when she saw me pacing frantically outside trying to wrap up said conference call. I’m extremely thankful that she stayed because we had an absolute blast. We had an incredible conversation, enjoyed some of the coldest beer in Media, and ended the night with a double hug by the parking garage with plans to meet up again soon.
The day Andrew proposed, we were enjoying a short vacation on Long Beach Island (LBI). It was already a special time for us because it marked the day we first met at orientation several years earlier. That morning, we took our dog Ruby for a walk on the beach - something we always do in LBI. I was having the best time running and playing with Ruby around the water that I didn’t notice Andrew was avoiding the ocean entirely (totally not typical). We got back to the dune and Andrew said, “Oh my gosh, I almost forgot, today is the day we first met!” He continued to say the most beautiful things about our relationship and our time together, handed me Ruby’s leash, and got down on one knee. I blurted out, “yes, yes, yes, yes!” before he could finish asking, “will you marry me?” Rumor has it I was also jumping up and down (ask our nieces). But that wasn’t the end of the surprise. “Okay," he said, "now turn around and say 'hi' to everyone.” To my utter surprise, my mom, dad, and sister were at the top of the dune with his mom, dad, brother, sister-in-law, uncle, and nieces, smiling and waving. It was the absolute best day of my life - until our wedding!
