Sydney Hartkopp attends her first Alateen meeting and meets Dusty Edington. There is light flirting and a lot of laughter. Dusty and Sydney continue to be friends, attend the same meetings and hang out with the same people. However, nothing but platonic friendship develops. *The year is 2012. Sydney is graduating high school and attending her last Alateen meeting in Wichita. Dusty and Sydney have not seen each other in a while. However, Dusty hears about Sydney's last meeting and decides to come see her off. Sydney is surprised and touched to see him there. *The year is 2013. Miley no longer has her gorgeous locks and has traded in Nicholas Sparks for Robin Thicke; the song Wagon Wheel makes a fraternity party come back; we still don't know what Foxes say. Dusty is eating at Applebees with his brother Cody and Cody's then girlfriend Maggie. The trio finish their dinner and, as they're heading out the door, they see Sydney and her college roomate Chloe walking in. Dusty then makes a bet with his brother that he will be dating Sydney in the next year. *The year is still 2013. Beyonce has released one of the greatest albums of all time; Kimye is engaged; "selfie" is declared the Oxford Dictionary's word of the year. Dusty Edington makes good on his brotherly promise by sliding into Sydney's DM's while she is away at college. The two begin flirting and decide to go on a date later on that month. They are surprised at how much chemistry they have and, much to the shock of literally anyone who knew them growing up, the two decide to begin dating the day Dusty graduates from high school. The rest is history.
