Mount Rainier

Mount Rainier

Mount Rainier National Park — About 1-1.5 hrs from Puyallup and 2hrs from Tacoma. If you visit Paradise, we recommend arriving early (before 7:00 AM) to avoid traffic. You’ll need to purchase a day pass online in advance or have a National Park Pass. Nisqually Vista Trail — (Park at Paradise) Our favorite trail! You'll see water, meadows, and animals. Easy hike. Skyline Loop Trail (Park at Paradise) — Moderate/difficult hike, but has incredible views. Be prepared for some steep areas and bring hiking poles. Spot wildlife and Myrtle Falls. You can also try glissading — sliding down snow slopes on your feet or butt! Grove of the Patriarchs— Explore towering ancient trees and scenic Silver Falls on this relatively easy trail, suitable for most ages and abilities. Camp Muir Hike — For experienced hikers, this trail offers snowy terrain even in summer and breathtaking mountain views. Bring crampons or microspikes in case of snow. Reflection Lake — A peaceful spot ideal for photos.

Seattle

Seattle

WA

Pike Place Market — Iconic market with fresh food, flowers, and crafts. We recommend the lentil sambusas + green sauce at Land of Origin! Washington Park Arboretum & Madison Park Beach— Relax by the lake with trails and water views. Lake Union— Perfect for picnics and watching seaplanes; kayaking and paddle boarding available (expect crowds on weekends). Asian Food— FOB Sushi for you-pick-it nigiri and rolls by the pound (takeout box-friendly) and Onibaba for onigiri and ochazuke (our favorite!) Discovery Park— Walk the cliffside trails during golden hour. Kerry Park— An iconic viewpoint. Here, you'll get the perfect postcard view of the Seattle skyline with the Space Needle in the foreground and Mt. Rainier standing in the background. If visiting on a Sunday, St. Anne's Catholic Church is nearby. Warm and welcoming parish for Catholic Mass. Columbia Tower Sky View Café— Panoramic city views from the 40th floor café... though there are so many good coffee joints everywhere.

Seattle Parking Tip

While street parking is available in downtown Seattle, we recommend reserving spots in the (many) parking garages through Spot Hero. We've found that it is far cheaper to reserve parking accommodations in advance. The site helps find instantly available parking spots that are within walking distance of your final destination.

North Tacoma (Ruston/Point Defiance)

North Tacoma (Ruston/Point Defiance)

WA

When we visit Tacoma, we prefer to spend most of our time in the northern area along the sound-- Ruston/Point Defiance, a 40min daytrip from Puyallup. You can walk Owen Beach nestled inside the Point Defiance Park and see Mt. Rainier from the waterside if it's not covered by the clouds! Enjoy seafood joints dotting the waterfront, stroll the gardens, or go window shopping at Point Ruston. Owen Beach — A pebbly beach along Ruston Way perfect for relaxing by the water and enjoying the sound. Bring a picnic and your swimsuits! Point Defiance Park and Zoo— Explore the gardens, walking trails, aquarium, and waterfront in this beautiful urban park. Ruston Way Waterfront — A scenic walkway along the Puget Sound with spots to dine. Easy to kill a whole day here. Playground for kids overlooks the water. Free parking in the garage! Food: A trek inland is Asado, an Argentinian mesquite-fired grill chophouse. Pro-tip, reserve with Resy. If you have the AMEX Platinum, you get credit back!

Barclay Lake and Bridal Veil Falls

Barclay Lake and Bridal Veil Falls

Barclay Lake- An easy hike/trail that takes you through lush, mossy forest that opens into a serene lake. 30min hike, tops. Bridal Veil Falls- a 1,320ft perennial waterfall flowing from nearby Lake Serene. It requires a lot of stairs and a decent climb, but it is a mostly shady hike up to a gorgeous fall that you can get right under! The payoff is worth it! Medium difficulty.

Puyallup and Eatonville

Puyallup and Eatonville

Puyallup is a jumping off point to hiking areas down south, near Eatonville (30min) Puyallup Farmers Market: Every Saturday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM (April–October) at Pioneer Park, this vibrant market features fresh produce, local crafts, live music, and delicious food. It’s one of Washington State’s largest farmers markets and a great way to experience the local community. Little India (Puyallup): A conglomerate of food trucks that serve Indian + fusion bites and delicious drinks. Outdoor seating! Mill Haus Cider (Eatonville): 30min from Puyallup, but delicious fresh cider and American-style fare (plus beer!) Northwest Trek Wildlife Park (Eatonville): 30min from Puyallup. Local zoo with habitats for rehabilitated PNW animals. We recommend the walking path tickets vs driving tickets. They include a tram ride where you can see the animals up close! Kid-friendly. Little Mashel Falls (30 min from Puyallup): Our favorite nearby set of three waterfalls! Park at Bud Blancher Trailhead.

Olympic Peninsula / Rainforest

Olympic Peninsula / Rainforest

The Olympic Peninsula/Rainforest offers coastal views, fresh seafood, and unique outdoor adventures. Note that this is a 2.5-3hr commute from the Puyallup area. Waterfront Restaurants Hama Hama Oyster Saloon (Lilliwaup)— Known for fresh oysters and Pacific Northwest seafood with a rustic, cozy vibe right on the water. (We love their monthly oyster subscription!) The Clearwater Restaurant (Sequim)— Overlooking the Dungeness River, enjoy fresh local catches and seasonal menus in a charming riverside setting. Anthony’s at S’Klallam Bay— Waterfront dining with views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and delicious local seafood. Outdoor Experiences: Hoh Rainforest— Wander among ancient moss-draped trees in one of the world’s most remarkable temperate rainforests. Shi Shi Beach & Point of the Arches — Rugged coastline with tide pools and sea stacks, great for beachcombing. Olympic National Forest — Offers hiking, camping, and waterfalls surrounded by breathtaking scenery.
