We're both members of an outdoor social club in Pittsburgh, Explorer's Club of Pittsburgh (ECP for short.) In winter of 2022/2023, Lindsey was learning about mountaineering in one of the series of courses they offer and Zach was helping teach the newbie mountaineers. One of our trips to train is particularly brutal, a 14-mile hike starting at midnight, leading straight into a multipitch rock climbing route, then we slept on the summit of Seneca Rocks. Did we mention it's in December? And we had just experienced a brutal ice storm? Well. That happened. Zach's team go to the summit first and set up stoves and started boiling water for meals. Lindsey's team (led by another amazing ECP instructor) got the the top in the darkness and were exhausted, freezing, and bonking. Zach and his team immediately helped them out, set up our sleeping areas and started cooking their dinners. Lindsey was freezing, wet, and nearly hypothermic (wet feet are the WORST.) Someone handed her a shot of whiskey and a cup of hot water and she immediately came back to life. That whiskey shot was clutch. That was our first meeting. Lindsey was bonking and Zach had all the energy in the world (no one's surprised that Zach still had energy.) Later that month, we had an ECP holiday party with food, booze, and a white elephant. This was the party where Zach decided to ask Lindsey out! He did so the next day via Facebook messenger. Lindsey, thinking he just needed some training partners for his upcoming Kilimanjaro trip, said "Sure! Let's touch base after the holiday!" and promptly forgot about it. The holiday passed, and Zach suggested meeting up at an ECP climbing social. So, we did! Then, when he suggested dinner, Lindsey finally realized, "Oohhh, this is a DATE." And we've been together ever since. Adventure buddies for life, we do it all! (Though some of it not very well!) Dog snuggling, climbing tall things (mountains, cliffs, giant icicles), hammocking, paddling, hiking, skiing, and mountain biking.
