Maria and Jase went to different schools, but during the last eight weeks of her senior year, Maria came across Jase on Facebook. He had just changed his profile picture, so it popped up on her feed. She hadn’t even realized they were Facebook friends, but he seemed sweet, so she liked the photo. A few days later, he liked one of hers back—and that’s when she knew he had noticed her. She told herself, “If he doesn’t talk to me, I won’t talk to him, and that’s just going to have to be okay.” She would pace around her room, giddy, imagining what it would feel like when he finally reached out. A few days later, he did. She made sure to wait at least fifteen minutes before opening his messages, just to play it cool. As luck would have it, he played baseball, and their schools were set to play each other the following week. Maria and her friend knew they had to go see what this was all about. They waited until he was pitching to snap a picture of him, both of them analyzing each other from a distance and trying not to make it obvious. After chatting for two weeks, they went on their first date at Hoots BBQ. That night, in her parents’ driveway, they shared their first kiss. A week later, on their second date, Jase asked if he could be her boyfriend. Prom was just two weeks away. Even though it was last minute—and Maria had never brought a date to prom before—she brought up the idea. Her friends thought she was crazy for taking someone she barely knew to her senior prom. Maybe she was. But she had a feeling he wouldn’t be a stranger for long. Clearly, she was right. :)
