Favorite Hiking Spots

The Black Hills is full of stunning sights and exciting adventures. Jeff and Rose both LOVE to take advantage of the gorgeous location where they live. Below they have shared some of their favorite hiking, biking, and fishing spots. Note: Any trail in Custer State Park requires a state park pass
Boulder Hill Trailhead

Boulder Hill Trailhead

23853 Boulder Hill Road, Rapid City, SD 57702

This trailhead is about 15 minutes south of Rapid City. It is a beautiful hike with panoramic views of Rapid City and the southern hills. On a clear day, one can see the side of Abraham Lincoln on Mt. Rushmore. It is moderately difficult with a steep incline. It can take anywhere from 1-2 hours to complete.

Buzzard's Roost Trailhead

Buzzard's Roost Trailhead

South Dakota 44, Rapid City, SD 57702

These trails are about 5 miles west of Rapid City and vary in length and difficulty depending on the route. An average hiking time would take 1-2 hours. At the summit, there are spectacular views of the Black Hills and Rapid City.

Spring Creek Trailhead

Spring Creek Trailhead

Mount Rushmore UT, SD 57702, Rapid City, SD 57702

This trail is about 20 miles outside of Rapid City and has several creek crossings all of which have narrow bridges to prevent wet feet. This trail has a beautiful view of Sheridan Lake at the summit, and options for cliff jumping for the brave of heart. This trail is generally considered an easy trail and can be completed in 1-2 hours.

Grace Coolidge Walk-in Fishing Area

Grace Coolidge Walk-in Fishing Area

This trail is a peaceful, easy hike located in Custer State Park. It is an out-and-back trail that leads to six low-head dams. This trail has several creek crossings and is known as a good trout fishing spot. This trail is 6 miles round trip, but one can turn around at any point.

Black Elk Peak

Black Elk Peak

SD 57751

This hike is located in Custer State Park and has many starting points but is best known for the trailhead that starts at Sylvan Lake. This hike is 7 miles and moderately challenging, but the views from the top are unbelievable. At 7,242 feet, Black Elk Peak is the highest elevation west of the Rocky Mountains until the Pyrenees Mountains in France. This is also the first place where Jeff and Rose said, "I love you."

Mickelson Trail

Mickelson Trail

Mickelson Trail, Hill City, SD

The Mickelson Trail is a 108-mile trail that runs from Edgemont to Deadwood. For nearly 100 years the trail served as a train route until it was converted into a trail system. The trail is wide and covered with gravel making it great for strollers and bikes. If you start your trip in Hill City, grab a tasty bite at one of the local restaurants. Jeff proposed to Rose at mile marker 66 of the Mickelson Trail, and they enjoyed lunch at The Alpine Inn following Jeff's proposal.

Rock Maze

Rock Maze

Nemo Road, Deadwood, SD 57732

This amazing spot is located 15 miles west of Rapid City straight across from the Steamboat Picnic Area. It is a short trail that is full of large boulders with pathways weaving in and out of rocks, hence the name Rock Maze. Just past the maze, there is a peaceful creek. It is a fun place to explore is climb around. It is a must-see if you have young adventurous kids.
