This is the story of how Steven and Amanda fell in love. It was serendipitous, at a time when neither was expecting to find love, and it was a moment that almost passed them by had they not been in the right place at the right time. Amanda moved from Michigan to Colorado Springs to work as a travel occupational therapist for the 2018/2019 school year. She was only contracted to work there until June, and she was already signed up for her next travel job in Washington state in August. Steven was stationed in Colorado Springs with the Army, having been assigned there after finishing flight school in Alabama, and had recently returned from a deployment to Afghanistan that spring. The two were both volunteers at their local rock climbing gym, where they helped run the Adaptive Climbing program for kids with disabilities. Amanda had seen Steven there a few times earlier that summer. She loved how patient, kind and encouraging he was as he worked with a young girl with autism. He brought in princess stickers and let her stick them to the rocks, and became her biggest cheerleader when she would attempt to climb the wall. Amanda, watching from afar, was absolutely smitten. Steven noticed how gentle and thoughtful Amanda was as she worked with the kids. He thought she was the cutest girl there and was waiting for his chance. One evening, Amanda was at the rock climbing gym with a male friend, and she bumped into Steven, who was climbing by himself. Amanda invited him to join their group, and they spent the next few hours climbing together. Near the end of the night, Steven had befriended Amanda's male friend, and they exchanged numbers. Amanda suddenly blurted out "I want his number too!" and pouted flirtatiously, because in those few hours she had grown more fond of Steven. Steven laughed in relief, because up until that moment, he thought he had interrupted a date! At the exit, Amanda gave Steven her number, because she couldn't leave Colorado without seeing what could be. Steven smiled sweetly, promising to reach out. A few days later, Steven asked Amanda to get breakfast with him after their next volunteer shift. They had their first date on June 8th, 2019, and have been adventuring together ever since. Since then, they made it through a year of long distance, several moves across the country, job changes, a 9 month deployment to South Korea for Steven, leaving the army, and making the decision to pursue graduate school at the University of Michigan. Through all of these major life changes and adventures, one thing has remained consistent; Amanda and Steven are doing it all together.
