Mountain Humane
You're reading this right -- go volunteer at the local no-kill animal shelter in Hailey! Mountain Humane is always looking for volunteers but for those just looking to help a little and interact with the animals, public dog walking hours are daily from 11am-1pm and 3pm-4pm. Public cat socialization hours are 11am-6pm.
Horseback Riding
While Sun Valley may not flaunt its reputation as a part of the wild west, don't be fooled. Horsemanship runs deep in the valley which was established by ranchers and miners nearly 130 years ago. Today, horses are found on nearly every trail and country road bouncing their cargo along as if time never progressed. Whether it's a pony ride, a trail ride into the mountains, or a multi-day outfitted expedition you will find a capable and colorful group of outfitters in Sun Valley ready to let you ride off into the sunset.
Golf
Sun Valley golf was most recently recognized by Golf Digest as one of the top 75 resort courses in North America. Sun Valley's signature course, Trail Creek, promises to provide a challenging round of golf for every level of player. Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed this traditional alpine course in 1980 with a full compliment of stream carries and ominous bunkers well positioned to catch the errant shot. Play crosses the beautiful Trail Creek seven times on the front nine alone! Coupled with fantastic views of the surrounding mountains and ever-present crystal blue skies, you will find a round of golf on the Trail Creek Course a well-earned addition to any golf resume. Sun Valley Music Festival
Music festival runs from July 26th, 2020 - August 20th, 2020 The Sun Valley Music Festival, running semi-nightly, is the perfect way to make the sun-kissed memories you’ll think back to when wintertime rolls around again. The days may be getting shorter, but it never feels that way atop a blanket on the grass with the sound of strings drifting up toward the mountain peaks, and pink sky going on for miles.
Rock-climbing & Mountaineering
Some of the best alpine granite in the country can be found in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area north of Sun Valley. With a short hike you can access areas such the Elephant’s Perch and Finger of Fate. By late July most of the technical peaks in the Sawtooths can be done as pure rock climbs including Mt. Heyburn and Warbonnet. Also, there are some world-class cragging destinations in Southern Idaho a short drive from the Sun Valley area including City of Rocks and Castle Rock State Park. Team up with local outfitters listed below to round out your Sun Valley vacation with a rock climbing/mountaineering adventure. Guides can lead you to some of the amazing climbing areas surrounding Sun Valley, or offer a day of instruction for any ability level.
Sun Valley Gun Club
SVGC offers trap, five-stand and sporting clays with something to challenge shooters of every level. Whether you are new to target shooting or experienced, they will assist you in all phases of the sport. Group and private instruction are both available, as well as private shooting events.
Mountain Biking
Known for flowy, laomy buff singletrack complemented with more rowdy, advanced terrain in the sub-alpine and alpine, riders can turn it up for weeks on end without ever repeating the same ride. In a place where every ride takes you somewhere magical, it's as though you've arrived in mountain bike nirvana. As of summer 2014, Sun Valley Resort added lift-accessed mountain biking on Bald Mountain. With 3,400 feet of vertical drop to the valley floor, the European-style ski mountain lends itself quite well to a hair-on-fire big mountain experience on two wheels.
Ice Skating
Year-round ice. It’s not just for cocktail drinkers. Ice-skaters and hockey fans can lace up, too, no matter the season. Home to the Sun Valley Summer Ice Shows, and winter and summer public ice time, the Sun Valley Ice Rink’s outdoor ice-sheet and indoor arena enjoy one of the most spectacular locations out and a bedazzling list of big-name skaters often practicing and performing there. (Skate rentals are available at the fully equipped Pro Shop for feet of all sizes, except the absurdly freakish. Sorry. Group and private lessons are also available with a staff of pros led by Olympic silver medallist Linda Fratianne. Check the current indoor ice rink schedule for times and use).
Sun Valley on Ice
Saturday, August 1st, 2020 at 8pm at the Sun Valley Ice Rink. Every summer, SV delivers an original season of summer ice shows highlighting new stars and impressive athletic routines. The celebrated Sun Valley on Ice opens July 4th and runs select Saturday nights through Labor Day, featuring an all-star lineup of some of the world’s finest skaters.
Fly Fishing
Sun Valley still supports the kind of fishery you might have imagined existed back when Lewis & Clark first made their trip through Idaho. Fly fishing on four extraordinarily diverse waterways sit anywhere from a stones throw to an hour drive away hold a diverse species of fish. Find monstrous brown trout in Silver Creek, healthy rainbows in the Big Wood River, vibrant cutthroats in the Lost River, and apex bull trout & salmonoids in the Salmon River. Combined, these famed Idaho rivers/creeks make the area a true nexus of freshwater fly fishing.
Sun Valley Lake
Slip out onto the water in a rented paddle boat, and discover the fun and escape of Sun Valley Lake. If you prefer to stay onshore, there’s always a game of horseshoes waiting in the sand, or a beach volleyball match to be stepped into. Located a short walk from the Sun Valley Lodge and Inn, Sun Valley Lake is an easy escape from the heat when it’s time for a little beach in the mountains. Fly Sun Valley - Paragliding
Fly Sun Valley is the only fully insured and permitted paragliding operation of the Sun Valley Resort, conducting flights in cooperation with the Sun Valley Company and through an exclusive commercial permit issued by the US Forest Service. Fly Sun Valley is owned and operated by Chuck Smith. He began flying paragliders in 1987 in Switzerland, initially utilizing "parapentes" as a descent tool for mountaineering activities in the Alps and later for climbs in the Andes and Himalayas. He was involved in the formation of the American Paragliding Association, (APA) the original governing body of paragliding prior to its merger with the United States Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (USHPA).
