How We Met

She didn't like him at first...

Vlad and Yana met at their favorite IRC Church back in the summer of 2022. Vlad was already one of the church leaders, while Yana was a 16-year-old girl who had just moved to the U.S. They didn’t become friends right away—it was only their first meeting, and Yana didn’t think much of Vlad. She couldn’t understand his dyed hair and earrings, and Vlad was too busy at the time... The next time they spoke was at Vlad’s house, right after a New Year’s party in January 2023. It was a brief conversation where Yana asked Vlad how he had learned English so well, giving him a chance to speak a little proudly about himself:) Time passed, and by the fall of 2023, as it often happens, the colder it grew outside, the closer people grew inside. Although Vlad and Yana weren’t close friends or spending much time together, they shared ministry responsibilities. That’s when Vlad noticed her. He realized that the one he had always been searching for was actually right there. And he fell in love... He started messaging her, finding reasons to connect and even suggesting they open a Jesus Club at her high school. She responded, and they began having long conversations over Telegram. It was time to talk more seriously, so Vlad proposed they chat on the phone. Soon, they were talking about life, the future—everything. Then came the time for action. Vlad lived in Renton, and Yana in Lynnwood, about 30 miles apart. It wasn’t easy for him to find a reason to be near Yana, but on October 11th, the church organized street evangelism before the STORM conference. Vlad unexpectedly offered to pick up Yana and her friend Masha. By some miracle (and perhaps Vlad’s subtle involvement), their evangelism teams were combined for that day. They spent time together on the cold streets of Everett, speaking to those in need. When it was time to head home, they dropped Masha off, and with only a few minutes left to Yana’s place, Vlad suggested, “What if we went for a little ride, just the two of us? Not too long, since you have school tomorrow.” And she said her first “yes.” After that, they started talking more, spending time with their friend group but still uncertain about their feelings for each other. One day, they went for a walk in Seattle at a park with a view of the ocean. It was already dark and cold, as it often is here. They were talking as usual, effortlessly finding topics to discuss. Both are good storytellers and attentive listeners. They stood there, looking at the ocean, as Yana kept sharing her stories. Vlad grew silent, not saying a word for 4-5 minutes, which made her a bit anxious. Then he finally said, “Yana, I think I really like you.” That moment, on November 23rd, 2023, was when it all began. A year passed quickly. Together they shared countless beautiful moments: their first words of love, a surprise proposal at church, Yana’s high school graduation, family gatherings, getting their first apartment and car, and endless preparations … for this day, the day of their wedding. November 23rd, 2024.
