How We Met

If this were a rom-com, the premise would be obvious: two people on opposite sides of a dramatic professional rivalry, destined to meet somewhere between fate and the reference desk. We first crossed paths while working in feuding library systems. Jonathan was at the County Library—the nation’s first all-digital public library—while Emma managed a special collection of books for the City's Public Library, devoted to the tangible: paper, ink, and history you can hold in your hands. Naturally, we were positioned as rivals—screen versus spine, future versus tradition. The contrasts didn’t stop there. Emma is the studious one—quiet, reserved, happiest in peaceful places and spaces. Jon brings the street smarts, the ease of someone who knows how to read a room, and the energy of a musician who always ends up as the life of the party. On paper, we couldn’t have been more different. But as all good rom-coms go, the rivalry didn’t last long. Beneath the professional contrast was an undeniable alignment: shared values, mutual curiosity, and a deep love for stories, community, and making knowledge accessible to all. What began as professional overlap quickly grew into friendship, laughter, and something far more meaningful. From digital to analog, we’ve always been two sides of the same coin. And in true rom-com fashion, it turns out the best stories aren’t found on a shelf or a server—they’re the ones you write together.
