For Vittoria, the proposal had to be special. Most importantly, it had to fit the love that she and Sal share. All the while, it had to be balanced: one-part grand gesture, one-part intimate conversation. And the opportunity came on April 20th 2018, when Vittoria surprised Sal with a weekend getaway to Boston for his birthday. The couple scheduled oyster shucking lessons in the East Boston Harbor. Sal planned to propose at some point during the experience. Looking back, every moment of that day plays like its own cinematic vignette leading up to the proposal: walking through a Boston street market; sightseeing in Little Italy and eating an obligatory cannoli at Mike’s Pastry; taking pictures in front of the Paul Revere statute; and driving in an Uber to the dock in East Boston. That day on the dock, shucking oysters presented the perfect moment. They arrived to a table extending out into the harbor under a crystal blue sky. The group with Vittoria and Sal gave off good vibes, and shucking oysters was a great experience. Once the shucking ended, Sal saw his moment. He asked the other participant to take a photo of him and Vittoria at the end of the dock. As the guy began to shoot, Sal told our instructor, “You’re about to be part of something special for us…” Sal positioned himself next to Vittoria at the end of the dock. Turning toward Vittoria, Sal looked into her eyes and said “I have a question for you…” As Sal fumbled for the ring in one of his pockets, searching for the right words at this perfect moment, Vittoria saw what was coming. She held back from interrupting, giving Sal his moment. Sal finally retrieved the ring from his pocket and dropped down on one knee: “I was wondering, if you would spend the rest of your life with me?” Vittoria exclaimed “Oh my God! Yes! Yes! Of course!”
