How We Met

August 29, 2018

It was a beautiful day for a first flight lesson out at the Ames airport and Steven Fest was scared for his daughters life. Jake was nearly complete with his 5 hour shift at the airport and was more concerned about the father than the girl who just went up for her first flight lesson. Unlike Steven, Jake knew the instructor personally and knew that his daughter would return safe and excited for her next flight. He walked up to the nervous father, introduced himself, and offered a beverage. He sat with the man for a while and explained some of the things his daughter would be doing on her first flight, and gave him a spare radio so he could listen for her return. It was not Jake's slicked back greasy hair, or pungent jet fuel cologne he wore that day that impressed Christie, but the story Steven told on the car ride home of the airport boy with a heart. It would be a few emails, 6 months of talking, some study dates, and Christie pretending to be interested in an executive position in Jake's club until their first date. It went so well he ended the date with "Let's stay in touch!" right before closing the car door on her face. Despite this, she agreed to another date.

The Proposal

September 25, 2020

It was a beautiful morning at the Lake of the Ozarks. The sun was just beginning to peak over the horizon, illuminating the fog over the water. Jake had it all planned out. Devon and Andy were to take photos and video while he walked down to the dock with his soon to be Fiancé and proposed. After getting ready he asked Christie if she wanted to go work down by the dock to watch the sunrise and she immediately said no. "It's chilly!" she argued. Jake convinced her finally to come down despite the chill, and they strolled on down. After pulling out some nice chairs and wiping them down, setting them up for a picture perfect moment, Christie exclaimed "The boat is dry under the awning! Put the chairs away. I want to sit in here." Strike 2. Jake then proceeded to sit down in the boat with Christie and begin talking about how lucky of a man he was to have her in his life. He was nervous and mumbled through his words a bit when Christie looked over his shoulder, smiled, and said "You're dumb." He spun around to see Devon standing there, video recording the events on the boat. The element of surprise was lost. Jake knelt down to one knee, breaking the straps off of his knock off burkes, and asked Christie to be his wife. She said yes!
