In 2009, Sam studied abroad in Auckland, New Zealand, because "it was so far away and she'd never go back." That same year, Vinnie moved from Australia to Auckland to pursue a career in aviation. Vinnie spent the next few years getting his pilot's license and eventually working for the airport, while Sam finished school back in the States, got a job, quit said job, and moved back to New Zealand. There, she worked in hospitality (code for bartending) and a boutique marketing, PR and events agency. Unbeknownst to the future lovebirds, they both frequented the same bars in the Viaduct, including Sam's favorite late-night-spot, Danny Doolans. Sam's visa expired and she moved back home, where she wound up working for a New Zealand company in New York. Lucky for her, it took her back to New Zealand every now and then - and one fateful trip (one, in fact, she thought would be her last), she met a dashing young man with an Australian accent at - you guessed it - Danny Doolans. After a few dates (including a trip to the emergency room), Vinnie suggested trying the whole long distance thing. Sam thought he was absolutely nuts, but decided to give it a go. Fast-forward seven months when Vinnie booked a trip to the US and met Sam's family; fast-forward another five when Sam visited New Zealand; and another few when Sam got a job in Auckland and made the big move back to New Zealand. The rest, as they say, is history. For two and a half years, Sam and Vinnie travelled back and forth from New Zealand to New York and Australia, meeting and spending time with family and friends across the globe. Despite a number of clues ("I'll plan dinner this night," "you should get your nails done!," "are you doing your hair?"), Sam was none-the-wiser when Vinnie popped the question in Hawaii in April 2017. Several trips, a move to the US, new jobs, new apartments, mountains of visa paperwork, a pandemic, a postponed wedding, a puppy, and a new home later, they're ready to say "I do".
