It's hard to believe so much time has passed, but it's been about 18 years since we met when Vince was working in communications for the blood bank in Fresno and John had just started his time as a reporter at CBS-47. Despite the journalism connection, it was amusing that Vince had no idea who John was. Okay, John was more surprised than amused, as he was used to people knowing who he was. To be clear, his typical experience was that people were more interested in who he was as a local celeb than who he was in real life. That was likely one of the many reasons there was an immediate connection. "You can watch me on TV tonight," John joked one day early on, to which Vince responded, "That's okay, I like Channel 30, but I'll see you later." (Side note: Vince later went to work for ABC-30.) The rest is truly history, and despite not being "on the same channel", it was clear to the two of us that we were on the same page. And now, two cities and nearly two decades later, we are content to sit down together after a long workday and watch other people deliver the local news in our new home in San Francisco.
There was no doubt early on that we were committed to each other. You just know when something is supposed to work, even on days when it takes a little extra work. But finally, after secret planning on John's part for some time, one day when hiking down to the Olivine Pools in Maui during a recent vacation, it became officially official when John popped the question and presented Vince with a ring (which we had bought together several months earlier in Ventura: we said we knew it was a sure thing, after all). This time Vince was surprised, truly. We had waited, mostly because of Vince's stubbornness, until a time when it was legal in all 50 states for the two of us to be married. That time came and passed, and life happened as it does on a daily basis, and the right moment came on the right day in the right place, to take the final steps to make it complete. Halloween was a good day for a treat.
