The Beginning

It was the middle of a blistering Louisiana summer day, the kind of heat that kissed your skin and wouldn’t let go, thickening the air with dreams too heavy to rise. I had been job-hunting all day, wandering from bar to bar with a hopeful heart and an ever-sweating brow. As the sun rose high over downtown, casting rays of heat across the sidewalks, I ducked into a little Irish pub nestled in the heart of Baton Rouge. It was dim inside, cool and comforting, like stepping into another world. The scent of old wood, beer, and popcorn greeted me like an old friend. He was there snuggled into one of the large wooden booths, I had hardly even noticed him at first. His smile came easy, like it belonged there, and the moment our eyes met, something in me whispered, "There HE is." I asked about a job and passed him my résumé, our eyes locking in a moment that felt far more important than paperwork. He took it gently, lips curled into a smile, and said with quiet confidence, 'Expect a call soon.' What started as shifts and shared jokes turned into stolen glances, late-night lock-ups filled with stories and playlists, and eventually, a slow dance in the empty pub after closing time, just the two of us and the hum of neon. Now, with time soaked memories, I still walk into rooms and find him there—my forever best friend—the same way I found him that summer day, in the little Irish pub that changed everything.
