Travel Note
There are several options as to getting into Mexico for those who are local to the area. Driving into Mexico - Driving into Mexico is very straightforward and your GPS will guide you to your accommodation. Make sure to stop and get Mexican car insurance and fill up on gas before you cross the border. There are many locations right before the border to buy insurance from. The one we go to is at the Chevron on 104 W San Ysidro Blvd, San Ysidro, CA 92173 because it's got both gas and insurance! When driving in Mexico, make sure to bring small bills for the toll roads, as there are 1-2 tolls before you get into Rosarito. There is typically no wait to cross into Mexico, but coming back can be 1-3 hours depending on the time and day of the week. Check our border wait times here: https://bwt.cbp.gov Parking in San Diego & walking across the border - Walking across the border is our newest FAVORITE way to cross the border. There are shorter border wait times and no hassle with driving in a foreign country. The caveat, is that it is a little more pricey, you're paying for convenience. We recently used Border Station Parking at 4570 Camino De La Plaza, San Diego, CA 92173. You can pay in advance, or pay when you get there. There are several other lots nearby. From there you walk across the San Ysidro border (it's right next to a McDonalds). After you've crossed, you will catch a taxi (about $40 - you need cash) or take an Uber to your final accommodation. *Note- at the border your cellular service will throttle between a US provider and a MEX provider. You may or may not be able to catch an Uber due to the throttling, but there are lines of taxis. Taking the shuttle from San Diego - Reach out to Tony for more information.
