In February 2020, I (Veronica) found myself on Hinge, you know, the app "designed to be deleted." At this point in my dating experience, I wanted to be more intentional with whomever I’d connect with. I came across Miguel's profile. Right away, I noticed his gorgeous eyes and smile. I loved his photo rocking both his Dominican and Colombian pride plus that furrow of the eyebrow look he does, super cute! And then I saw, "oh, and he's in Law school!" *ding ding ding. Just something about an Educated and Charismatic Latino that does it for me. I immediately swiped right and messaged him first. Miguel responded with the "que lo que".... (Typical tigere behavior) Messages turned into banter, banter turned into vulnerability, and soon, it was time to meet. After one canceled date, a late night text would be sent (thanks to liquid courage), eliciting speech. It felt as though we clicked right away. As the whole world was shutting down, we got closer and our relationship blossomed pretty quickly. Our first date: she chose Pelham Bay Park in May tucked away past the overpass from Buhre Ave, on a quaint street that seemed to exist outside of time. I (Miguel) arrived early, nervous energy pooling from my chest. You helped me find parking nearby in front of a large tree, pouring from the earth. Once parked, we walked to a Pizzeria, but it was closed. We traveled to a second pizza place that had a strange aura that afternoon—the smell of their pizza's scent carried an aroma like they were whispering sweet nothings into our nostrils. With pizza in hand, we walked to the park across the overpass, hearing the cars pass beneath us, shaking the concrete. While at the park, we ate, laughed, danced (V showed me her heel-toe dance move), and acro yoga. The park’s air was fresh and liberating while the world was under lockdown. For a brief moment, it felt as though the Bronx stopped spinning, just for us. V’s deep black sweater contrasted against the green backdrop shined like onyx. She scanned the park, the grass flowing, her eyes locked on mine as if an invisible thread pulled us closer. Little did we know four years later, we would be getting engaged at this very spot. We spent a lot of time working at home in each others’ spaces, took breaks together, cooked, gamed, danced…I couldn’t believe I fell in love during a Pandemic. It's a blessing in disguise. A blessing that continues to multiply in what will be 5 years very soon! I cannot wait to marry my best friend. Contigo, no hay limites en esta vida.
