Joe and Veronica met while studying for their MBA at Duquesne University. Joe noticed Veronica in their first class. He wanted to introduce himself but worried about how that would look the first week of class, so he decided to focus on the academic curriculum. They had another class together, and lo and behold, they were assigned to the same group project! This was clearly Joe’s chance to really impress Veronica. How, he did not know. She was clearly not from this planet—surely she is already with someone. Again, Joe waited to learn more before taking a chance. But there was no guarantee they’d have another class together—and this thought made him sick. Then came Accounting class, and there she was. Joe came up with an incredibly original idea to ask her to study with him for their exam. And she agreed! They spent an entire day studying together, although Joe has no recollection of it and Veronica flunked the test. It would take one more study session for Joe to muster the courage to ask Veronica out. As they walked out of the building, he gave it his best, true shot, and he received a Maybe. In his line of work, a Maybe is way closer to No. So Joe said ok and good night, and walked back to the T to go home. A couple weeks later, the Covid-19 Pandemic began. Before they knew it, everything was transitioning to Zoom and no one knew when it would end. Joe believed that his gut failed him, and the pandemic would formally end any chance he had with Veronica. He’d have to find a way to forget about it and move on. But before he could, she started reaching out to ask questions about homework. He politely answered the first question and assumed that would be it. But as it happened a couple more times, he realized there was an opening to a conversation. This led to their first date in Schenley Park, and then another in Mt. Washington. A little while later, Veronica asked Joe to be her boyfriend. It was an easy question to answer. And after a couple years, he decided to ask her one more high-stakes question—and it was a Yes this time.
