During the summer of 2017, DJ and Veronica met at a training retreat for their new student employment jobs as residential advisors. Let DJ tell it, he knew from the moment Veronica walked into the room that there was something special about the girl with the feed-in braids and infectious smile. Veronica previously saw DJ around campus but only knew him as the kid who always showed up 15 minutes late to chapel each morning. However, it was at the retreat that DJ caught her attention. Among hearing other students analyze the disparities that Black students navigate while pursuing an education at a predominantly-white institution, it was the voice of a young black man educating a room of faces that did not resemble his own that caused Veronica to scan the room for the source of the voice. Little did either of them know that they would soon be coworkers in the same building. Following the retreat's conclusion, DJ and Veronica moved their new residents into the hall and used the majority of their downtime in between hall meetings and classes to share meals at Penland Dining Hall, discuss various Biblical truths, and watch reruns of Martin. During their time together in Waco, Texas, they served within the church together, invested in the surrounding community, pledged Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and pursued their professional career interests. They even realized that they grew up less than an hour away from one another back home in the state of Georgia. As time passed, their friendship grew and blossomed into a genuine relationship built on vibes, transparency, and God. Here's to a celebration of life, love, and a friendship that matured into a relationship that will withstand the test of time.
