The fairytale began when Sammy and Varun first met while teaching middle school in East Harlem. Before earning the job title, Sammy was the model teacher with a Type A personality no one would quite measure up to. At the other end of the hall was Varun, the cool, calm, and quirky science teacher, focused on prepping for those pesky state tests. It did not take long for Varun to fall for the dramatic but lovable special education teacher. Some mornings, he would fight his co-teacher to walk with the front of his class just to hang out with Sammy for a few extra minutes. Unfortunately, she paid him no mind until… Later that year, Varun was leaving teaching, and probably New York, forever. A week before he left, Sammy agreed to go on a date with him and found out what she’d been missing. Their first date was in Astoria Park. They went to a bar nearby. Varun had tacos, and Sammy, who said she wasn’t hungry, ate half his plate. Varun did leave teaching, and New York, that Summer. But this love story was not yet done. In fact, it was just getting started. Despite being absolutely contradictory to Sammy’s typical ways, she threw caution to the wind and spontaneously flew to LA to visit Varun. From there, endless trips to California continued. Then, when Varun moved to DC for GW Law, he manipulated his course schedule to visit Sammy in New York any chance he could get. When they had just about had it with long distance, the pandemic hit, and BOOM - roommates at last. So what happened to the quirky science guy and the Type A social studies teacher, you may ask? Well, Varun graduated law school and became a ferocious public defender and… Sammy? She was promoted from model teacher to instructional coach with a doctorate on the way.
