Act 1: How it Started

From the Desk of Pinny D. Carter, The Monumental Magazine, Editor in Chief

Anthony and Amanda’s story has two acts so far: the first, in which they were “friendly acquaintances” in college, and the second, in which they discovered years later that they worked for the same company through a chance meeting in an elevator. Act one started nearly 10 years ago when Amanda and Anthony met while attending King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. They’d both grown up in PA – Amanda in the south-northeast and Anthony in the north-northeast, though he spent a lot of time with family in New York while growing up. At King’s they both studied accounting and were even assigned to work on the same group project one semester, but they were never more than friends.

Act 2: The Confession

Let’s set the scene for act two: Anthony had just moved to the DMV for a new job. On one of his first days at headquarters he waited for the elevator; to his surprise, he saw a familiar face when the doors opened. Amanda! He walked in and said: “Hello Amanda - you work for Kearney?” Amanda replied in stunning Amanda fashion: “Where else would I work?” The now-infamous exchange ended there. Ah, some reunions are sweeter than others. After seeing each other at company functions and participating together in community service committee events, the pair became friendlier. A few years later they ended up assigned to the same project. Here, dear readers, the romance truly begins. As the months passed Amanda realized that she’d developed feelings for Anthony. They both cared deeply about doing good work, about reasoning through problems and making the best choice. They counseled each other professionally and personally, and as the months ticked past, they realized just how aligned they were. This was an unexpected development, complicated significantly by working closely together on a daily basis. For those of you who know Amanda, you know that she’s not the type to beat around the bush. On a fateful Ash Wednesday, she resolved to address the matter head-on and share her feelings with Anthony. Well, the day passed, then the afternoon, and then the evening. They attended mass together with another coworker, and still – no confession. As they parted ways for the night Anthony even asked Amanda if she was okay, because she was acting oddly. Amanda waved it away with an excuse about a friend having a hard time, and they said good night. As she walked in the door, Amanda knew she couldn’t let another moment pass. She called Anthony and told him point blank: “I like you”. Anthony, a true accountant with a mind for accuracy, replied: “Like…like-like me?” To which Amanda responded: “Not anymore”! They’ve been giving each other hell ever since.

The Adventure Continues

Anthony and Amanda have found their match. Very soon after confessing their feelings for each other, they both knew they wanted to get married. They’ve supported each other through master’s programs and CPA exams, travel plans and family events, and everything in between. In each other they’ve found balance and perspective, and an excuse to make each other laugh every day. They’re so excited to start their life together and can’t wait for you to join them on their big day.
