You’ll need a valid passport and a Nigerian visa. US citizens typically require a visa, which can be obtained online through Nigeria’s eVisa application portal or from a Nigerian consulate. Ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates.
The local currency is the Nigerian Naira (NGN). It’s advisable to bring some cash in US dollars to exchange at the airport, local exchange bureaus, or a bank upon arrival. Alternatively, you can use Obi's exchange platform Green Panda, which allows you to set your preferred rate and easily exchange currency. (See travel note in Hotels tab).
Uber and Bolt are popular and generally reliable ride-hailing services in Lagos.
Lagos is typically warm and humid year-round, with temperatures ranging from 75-90°F. Lightweight, breathable clothing is recommended, along with sunscreen and mosquito repellent.
Vaccinations: Yellow fever vaccination is required for entry into Nigeria. Other recommended vaccines include typhoid, hepatitis A, and hepatitis B. Malaria Prevention: Lagos is in a malaria zone, so it's recommended to take antimalarial medication and use insect repellent. Water and Food Safety: Drink only bottled or boiled water and choose well-cooked meals. Avoid raw foods unless you are certain of the source.
Like any major city, Lagos has areas that are safer than others. Exercise usual precautions such as avoiding isolated areas at night and securing valuables. Stick to reputable transport options, and avoid showing large amounts of cash in public.
