Mehendi & Sangeet

5:00 pm - 11:00 pm

Greek Community Center of Yonkers
15 Leroy Avenue, Yonkers, NY 10705

Indian Attire or Casual Dressy

What is a Mehendi? Mehendi, otherwise known as henna, ceremony is a colorful, musical, and lively celebration that entails an elaborate application of henna designs on a bride’s hands and feet. Mehendi represents a sign of good luck for the newlyweds. The women attending usually get a small henna design on their hands. (Fun fact - groom’s name or his initials are also hidden in the design) What is Sangeet? A Sangeet ceremony is an Indian wedding tradition that involves singing, dancing and music. The Sangeet is a celebration of two families coming together in the union of their children. The ceremony offers respite from all the hectic seriousness of the wedding preparations. Parking is available. Uber is widely available in this area. There will be veg and non-veg options.

There will be Indian Catholic traditions taking place at the church. Customs and traditions TBD. Guests have about an hour and a half in between ceremonies. Feel free to go to the venue where will be providing small snacks, tea, and coffee. Or wander around the neighborhood -- we have recommended coffee shops/bars to grab a quick snack on our wedding website.

Baraat & Hindu Ceremony

3:30 pm - 6:00 pm

Indian Wear or Formal Attire

What is a baraat? Baraat is a groom's wedding procession/arrival to the wedding. It is customary for the groom to travel to the wedding venue on a mare or make a grand entrance accompanied by his family, groomsmen, and friends. When the Baraat arrives at the wedding venue, a ceremony known as the Milni (meeting) is carried out in which parents/relatives from the groom's and bride's sides greet each other. You will be given a program upon arrival that will guide & help you understand the various cultural traditions and ceremonies.
