Sometimes you make choices you don’t fully understand. And sometimes those choices lead to the most beautiful things in life. Some call this fate or chance; others call it providence. And so I found myself waking up before 4 am, getting into my car which barely started on a dying battery, and driving six hours on a cold November day to attend a weekend seminar on counseling that I could have easily attended a year ago only minutes from my house. I went looking for personal connection with God and to learn how to be better at guiding people into a healing relationship with him. Little did I know that he had the most wonderful gift in store for me. When Natanya and I talk about that first time we met, we imagine God smiling with excitement and amusement because he knew the great goodness that was to unfold but we certainly had no idea. While there was definitely some chemistry in our first interactions, we both had our reasons to doubt that it would turn into anything more. For two months we texted casually until I started calling her more intentionally around the New Year. It wasn't until a couple weeks later, however, that the magic really began. We started going through a 40-day prayer challenge using Draw the Circle by Mark Batterson. We had planned to only spend about half an hour each morning together, but we ended up praying for at least an hour every morning, plus again at night many times. And we shared in that sacred space of communication with God, we also really began to get to know each other more intimately. It was in prayer that we fell in love. It was in prayer that God led us forward into the unknown of expressing our affection for each other long before it felt safe to do so. It was in prayer that a love better than either of us had ever imagined blossomed in the hand of God. Four days after we finished our 40 days of exploring the promised land of God’s love and his gift to us of each other, I asked Natanya to marry me and she said yes.
