Take a walk around the Virginia state Capitol grounds. The Capitol was designed by Thomas Jefferson and first occupied in 1788 by Virginia's General Assembly, organized in 1619 as America's oldest elected representative legislature. Free one-hour guided tours are offered daily, including many holidays. Visitors also may tour on their own. Impressive interior designs and colors from 1910 have been replicated in the House and Senate chambers. An original marble statue of George Washington, done from life, presides in the Rotunda.
