Guanajuato is known for its thousands alleys that cross the city and in each alley there is an adventure; from finding a "taquería" where you least imagine it, to seeing picturesque landscapes created by the mixture between the colonial architecture of the city and its colors. Luckily for you, this is one of our planned activities on Thursday night.
The Mirador del Pípila is a square located on the hill of San Miguel, where there is a giant sculpture in honor of Pípila, hero of independence. From this viewpoint, you can appreciate one of the most beautiful panoramic views of Guanajuato. The viewpoint can be accessed by the panoramic road or by means of a funicular that starts at the back of the Juárez Theater.
The Center of Guanajuato has a lot to offer. On the streets and alleys that cross it, there are endless squares and things to see and restaurants and little shops to snoop around. We suggest starting at the Jardín de la Unión, from where you can see the Teatro Juárez, a neoclassical-style building that serves as the main venue for the Festival Internacional Cervantino, and from there walk towards the main campus of the University of Guanajuato, passing by the Basilica of Guanajuato to later finish on the terrace of Casa del Rector. This route is just one option, there are a thousand more.
For those who like to walk the aisles of the markets to see what trinkets to buy, there is the Mercado Hidalgo, a market that dates back to 1910 and was inaugurated by Porfirio Díaz. Adorned by a pink quarry façade, in this market you will find everything from handicrafts to typical sweets, as well as typical Mexican pottery.
Among the thousands of alleys in Guanajuato, this is the most famous and recognized. At the end of a very narrow alley, 2 balconies meet where, according to legend, Don Carlos and Doña Ana met there clandestinely to flirt, until Ana died at the hands of her father when he discovered her kissing Carlos. Legend has it that couples who kiss on the third step are guaranteed 7 years of happiness.
