Our Engagement Story

As written by Valera

After 4 hours on the road to Key West, for the first time in our lives, we were finally on this beautiful island, in the middle of the ocean. As we drove into narrow and crowded streets of Key West, the rain was pouring down. Freely roaming chickens were running across the roads. We were feeling a bit down, as we wanted to enjoy the ocean that day. We ran to a nearby restaurant and sat under the covers, looking at the ocean. And all of a sudden, the rain stopped and the clouds cleared out. We decided to walk to the beach. As we walked, we saw some beautiful historic parts of the town that we wouldn’t have seen otherwise. The water was crystal clear. We could see tiny fish swimming around. Unknown to Yuliya, our bag contained a very precious item, and I was very cautious to keep my eyes on the bag at all times. I decided to swim out and explore a rock formation a hundred yards from the beach, leaving Yuliya to watch our things as she was afraid of sharks. The rocks were big and slippery, with beautiful fish of all colors swimming around them. I thought, "Yuliya needs to see this". I swam back and convinced her to swim with me. We were joined by other people who were as short sighted for dangers as we were. I was glad. More menu options for the sharks besides us. JK After exploring the rest of the rocks together, we returned and I made sure everything was still in the bag. I took out the camera and put the special item into my pocket. I asked the couple next to us to take a photo of us. I showed the husband, Sam, how to use the camera and the little box I snuck out of the bag. His eyes lit up and we gave each other thumbs up. I nervously walked back to Yuliya, hoping she did not see any of that. We took one photo together. Then I gave Sam another thumbs up and he confirmed his readiness. I turned to Yuliya, suspecting she already knew, and got down on one knee into the ocean. As the little rocks were stabbing my knee, I asked her: "Will you be my wife?.."
