What started as just a summer road trip to Montana for Beth turned out to be the surprise of a lifetime—Dave had secretly planned every detail. The adventure began in Casper, Wyoming, where we played a round of golf with clients and friends. That evening, Dave surprised Beth with a dinner at a classic steakhouse alongside some of his best clients and their wives. Beth didn’t realize it at the time, but everyone at the table was in on the secret—that this wasn’t just a road trip, but the beginning of an engagement journey. From there, we made our way north, stopping for lunch in Billings before spending the night in Missoula. We wandered through downtown, enjoyed incredible Thai food, and the next morning discovered “Clyde Coffee” and a breakfast burrito so good that the line out the door made perfect sense. The next stop was Whitefish, Montana, where Dave surprised Beth with a stay at the stunning Whitefish Lodge. A sunset dinner with wine on the patio and a couples massage the next morning set the stage for what was to come: Glacier National Park. It was Beth’s first visit, and she quickly understood why Glacier was Dave’s favorite place. We marveled at Lake McDonald, where the mountains seem to rise straight out of the water, then enjoyed cocktails at the historic lodge before driving the breathtaking Going-to-the-Sun Road. Waterfalls, wildflowers, and sweeping views made the drive unforgettable. Our destination was the Hidden Lake trailhead. Dave, cooler in hand, had carefully chosen this hike as the place where he would ask the most important question of his life. Beth carried the bear spray (just in case!), and together we climbed the trail, stopping to soak in the views along the way. At the top, with the mountains stretched endlessly behind us, Dave got down on one knee. With a heartfelt, prepared speech, he poured out his love and asked Beth to marry him. Overwhelmed with emotion, Beth said yes—crying, shaking, and so overcome that she nearly dropped the ring. By sheer luck, a group of hikers from California captured the entire proposal on video. Strangers became friends as we toasted with seltzers Dave had packed, celebrating the moment together on the mountain. When we returned to the hotel, Beth found yet another surprise waiting: a room decorated with rose petals and her favorite wine chilling on ice. The joy of the day carried into the night. The next morning, we drove to Bozeman, where we played our first round of golf as an engaged couple, shared Mexican food and margaritas, and spent a morning wandering downtown coffee shops and enjoying breakfast before slowly making our way home. Family and friends—already in on the secret—were thrilled to finally celebrate the news. What began as a road trip ended as the trip of a lifetime, one we’ll never forget: the story of our engagement, forever tied to the mountains of Montana. We look forward to returning to Whitefish and the Hidden Lake hike in Glacier someday, to relive the magic of where it all began.
