There are a ton of different places you can stay but if you want to be VERY nearby you want to stay in North Charleston closest to the airport.
If you want to be nearest the beach (and about 30 minutes from festivities) I would choose Isle of Palms or Sullivan's Island. Mt. Pleasant gets you closer to the beach and will be a bit less expensive than being on the islands but it's still about 20 minutes from "the fun."
