How We Met

Snowvid to Saturday Brunch

In typical 2021 style, the world as we know it was ending and so were my [Tyler's] hopes to find that special someone. In the historic Valentine's day weekend of 2021 (Snowpacolypse or, Snowvid as Texans refer to it), Texas saw a snow and ice storm that Frosty the Snowman himself would have been fed up with. This was exactly the push I needed to try the online dating scene. I downloaded the dating app Hinge and a few hours of heavy swiping, I came across the picture of this beautiful girl in a light blue bridesmaid's dress surrounded by what must have been a dozen (I'm told now it was four) little girls with the biggest and most authentic smiles. The caption read something cheesy about the pains of wrangling flower girls. Of course I knew I had to impress her, so I exited the app to brainstorm the perfect pickup line. Prepared, I opened the app again, but Hinge has this really nice feature where it times out after a period of inactivity. I logged back and I could no longer find the light blue dress nor the girl who wore it. I went to sleep a sad sad man. The next morning, however, I opened the app and there she was! I delivered my line and of course it landed. Emily and I shared an instant connection. Our first phone conversation lasted well over three hours. Neither of us had been on a date in over a year, so to break the nerves we met at Target. Behind our face coverings we introduced ourselves and instantly I knew she was the one. She carried herself with such poise and confidence. I was on the candle isle when Emily found me, so I picked up the nearest candle and bought it, so that I could freeze our moment in time. We continued to brunch where we spent another five hours that felt like five minutes. Emily is so easy to talk to and has the sweetest heart. To this day, I thank God for Texas snow storms, cheesy pickup lines, and the Target candle section for bringing us together.
