We first met at a work function a few months after Cara moved to Bartlesville in 2014. We slowly started hanging out outside of work since we were neighbors and then we took our first trip together to Kansas City over Memorial Day weekend in 2015. This was a memorable trip for us as it was very last minute to meet up with Cara’s friends Lindsay and Aaron on their drive from Denver to their new home in North Carolina. The drive normally takes about 3.5 hours but took almost 5 because we were going through extreme downpours the entire way. When we finally got there, we learned KC is a very popular Memorial Day spot and couldn’t find a single hotel with availability, so at 2am we drove another hour west to Topeka. Since that weekend, we were able to expand on our love of traveling and have used Memorial Day to take a vacation every year. Little did we know that our love of travel would be the foundation for our relationship over the coming years. In July 2017 we were thrown a huge curve ball when Cara got an amazing work opportunity in Anchorage. She moved there in August, and Tyler visited for the first time in September. Thankfully, since we enjoy new experiences (and since Cara can sleep on airplanes better than anyone in the world), we were able to see each other almost every other month, and our nightly FaceTime talks were also a blessing. That two and a half years had its challenges but strengthened our relationship and helped us appreciate every moment we got to spend together.
When we were planning our trip for Labor Day weekend 2019, Cara was really wanting to do something on the east coast so that we could see Lindsay and Aaron and meet their newborn daughter, Savannah. Tyler saw this as the perfect opportunity, so he messaged Lindsay and said he was thinking about proposing that weekend and she was a huge help in planning with Cara while keeping her in the dark. We spent our first couple days in Hilton Head, SC and had a relaxing time at the resort there. Then on Saturday we drove to Savannah, GA where we met up with Lindsay and Aaron. Cara had seen pictures before of Wormsloe Historic Site and loved the Spanish moss trees that cover the drive. Tyler suggested going here that first afternoon while it was raining off and on to avoid the crowds that are normally there. As soon as we got there, Tyler told Cara to go buy their tickets and he’d wait with the car, really so he could put the ring in his pocket! As soon as we parked we all walked up the drive a little bit so that we could take some pictures. Needless to say, Cara was completely shocked, but we were able to get some great pictures of the whole thing thanks to Lindsay. It’s funny how our relationship has come full circle from a road trip to see the Barlows, then 4 years later a trip to visit them and getting engaged.
