Ty and Justina first met at mutual hangouts during their freshman year of high school in 2010. Through 2011 and 2012, they started hanging out more at combined youth group events that happened a few times a year. Ty led the music at most of these events which grew Justina's admiration for him, and though Justina had always been intrigued by his musical ability, character, and good looks, she was able to keep those feelings hidden really well. In the summer of 2013, they both were on staff at a summer camp. They became really good friends, finding it easy to laugh together and have good conversation as they grew as leaders and individuals. In December of 2013 they were asked, along with their friend Victoria, to help out at a retreat in Northern PA. Ty claims that this is when his feelings for Justina (finally) began. He remembers a few of the guys on the retreat teasing Justina saying they thought she was cute while throwing Hershey kisses at her. Ty’s growing feelings for her caused him to feel anger towards the disrespectful guys. This is when he knew his feelings for her were real. Also, the view of the stars in this part of PA was incredible, so one of the cold clear nights, Victoria, Ty, and Justina laid out and watched the stars (Justina remembers intentionally putting herself next to Ty). They spotted their first shooting star together, and Justina thought it was special. It sparked a connection that they both felt for the first time, though they did not talk about it until the following October of 2014. After a year of doubting and discerning whether or not the Lord was leading them to build upon this connection, they finally had "the talk" late on Halloween night. After escaping the crowd at a social event, they found themselves in a room with a piano, where Justina first sat down and played a melody to which Ty wrote words and began singing, asking the Spirit to guide their conversation. Thus began the ever-deepening relationship they've shared since.

Throughout their dating relationship, Ty and Justina strengthened their bond through learning how to communicate clearly, working as a team, loving each others differences, creating art together, carrying each other's burdens, balancing each others strengths and weaknesses, covering in love each other's failures, trusting each other intimately, enhancing each others gifts, and pointing each other to Jesus. They didn't always get it right (and still don't), but they've never stopped dancing along the way.

On the first night of the annual Mylin family vacation at Deep Creek Maryland, Ty proposed to Justina on the dock in the back yard of their lake house. He had the ring in a little gum box which read "you are my sunshine" that Justina gave him a week earlier with a note inside, continuing their routine of passing notes back and forth in it. By proposing, Ty was responding to what Justina wrote in that note: "I can't imagine life without you." He pulled out the ring and said "with this ring I commit to loving you for the rest of our lives, will you commit to walking with me for the rest of our lives?" He then whispered into Justina's ear, ‘Justina Joy,’ knelt down on one knee, and asked, ‘will you marry me?’ Justina was already saying yes repeatedly, laughing and smiling. Ty prayed for the two of them and their future before they went off the dock and met Justina's family who was just as joyful as the newly engaged couple.
